International Womens Day 2024 - Her Time

The History of International Women’s Day

(This post was originally published on March 9th 2020 and updated on March 4th 2024)

On March 8th, 1909, the Socialist Party of America held its first International Women's Day. This event was a response to the discrimination and inequality women were facing at the time. Women's movements, such as the Suffragettes, had formed to provide women with a voice and help them gain basic rights like voting, education, and employment.

The idea to celebrate  International Women's Day. began in the early 20th century, with the first march occurring in 1911. The movement gained traction thanks to Clara Zetkin, a German feminist, who pushed for the day to be a national holiday in 1910. The idea soon spread across Europe.

Today, International Women's Day has evolved into a global event that celebrates the economic, political, and social achievements of women around the world. This day is a testament to the progress that has been made in the fight for gender equality, and it continues to inspire us to keep pushing for more progress.

The campaign theme is for 2024 is #Inspireinclusion. This campaign urges everyone to individually commit to confronting prejudices and actively advocate gender equality in their daily routines. This can be done by backing businesses run by women, standing up for women's rights, educating oneself on gender matters, and actively supporting gender equality in everyday interactions.

To celebrate International Women's Day 2024, everyone is invited to strike an #InspireEquality pose. Take a picture of yourself with your embracing yourself symbolizing your commitment to embracing equality, and then post it to your social media with the hashtag #Inspireinclusion.

At Olyinka HQ, we believe that International Women's Day is a day to reflect on the progress that has been made and to continue working towards a more inclusive, equal future. We celebrate this day because it commemorates the progress of women, and it continues the work of movements like the Suffragettes to address the discrimination and injustices faced by women all over the world.

In commemoration, we have found a poem by Lang Leav called "Her Time." This poem speaks to the experiences of women worldwide and reminds us of the importance of continuing the fight for equality.
