12 body and mind positive Instagrammers to follow

Social media has revolutionized the way women perceive and appreciate their bodies. While some may argue that the term "body positive" and "body confidence" has been overused, we still continue to embrace and support a movement that gives voice to women who were previously marginalised. Platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook have become spaces where women can express their truth, shatter societal ideals of perfection, antiquated standards of beauty, and find like-minded individuals who share their experiences. At Olyinka, we see social media as an opportunity to present women in a new light. As contributors to the body positive movement, we would like to introduce you to a group of incredible body-positive influencers who are making a significant, positive impact in this field by promoting and supporting women especially women who struggles with body image.

  1. @Gabifresh

Gabi Greg, inspired by the body positivity movement, started a blog specifically for young women who share her body type and have an interest in fashion-forward, trendy looks. Gabi made headlines when a picture of her confidently wearing a two-piece bikini went viral. Her bold act broke down barriers and shattered negative stereotypes, inspiring countless women to embrace their bodies and follow suit. Gabi has since added fashion designer to her list of accomplishments, creating a swimwear line for women of all sizes. She is a proud body positivity activist activist, encouraging women to embrace their bodies, be fashionable, and exude confidence.

  2. @Ashleygraham

Ashley Graham, a supermodel, entrepreneur, author, and body positive activist, made history as the first "normal-sized" model to grace the covers of Vogue and Sports Illustrated's swimwear edition. Since signing with a major modeling agency at the age of 13, Ashley has faced the challenges of an industry that often fails to embrace diverse beauty standards. However, she discovered true happiness and success when she stopped comparing herself to other models and stopped striving to fit into the industry's narrow definition of beauty. Ashley now campaigns for women to redefine global beauty standards by becoming their own role models and embracing their bodies. With her own lingerie line and a book promoting self-acceptance, Ashley Graham is a trailblazer we admire.

  3. @Gabby3shabby

Gabourey Sidibe, an Oscar-nominated actress, author, and director, burst onto the scene with her debut film, Precious, which earned her critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination. Despite facing online trolls, Gabourey is a beacon of self-acceptance and resilience. Her clap-back game is strong, as she shuts down negativity with humor and grace. Fierce, bold, and uncompromising, Gabourey is redefining beauty and inspiring others to do the same. She currently stars in the successful TV show Empire, authored the best-selling book "This Is Just My Face, Try Not to Stare," and made her directorial debut with the short film "A Tale of Four." There seems to be no limit to what this powerhouse can achieve. Keep shining, Gabourey, we salute you.

  4. @Kenziebrenner

Kenzie Brenna caught our attention on Instagram, and we were immediately captivated by her presence. An actress, creator, and body positive warrior, Kenzie runs one of the most influential accounts on the platform today. She fearlessly addresses topics such as mental health, eating disorders, self-harm, OCD, and body dysmorphia—all challenges that many women face to varying degrees. Through her social media presence, Kenzie shares her personal journey with vulnerability, intelligence, care, and a touch of humor. She advocates for self-love and self-care, becoming a role model for women on a quest for healing and self-acceptance. We at Olyinka HQ are big fans and highly recommend following Kenzie if you resonate with any of the issues she has bravely tackled.

  5. @Winnie Harlow

Winnie Harlow, a Canadian model, spokesperson, and activist, gained recognition as one of the fourteen finalists on America's Next Top Model. What set her apart from the other contestants was her skin condition called Vitiligo, where the immune system attacks melanin in the body, resulting in white patches on the skin. Winnie refused to let this condition hinder her rise to success. Since her appearance on the show, she has graced the pages of major fashion magazines and walked prestigious catwalks, becoming a spokesperson for people with Vitiligo. By educating and leading by example, Winnie demonstrates that no condition should be a barrier to pursuing one's dreams. Her decision to participate in ANTM has not only transformed her own life but has also inspired millions of others. We admire this beautiful trailblazer. Winnie Harlow, we salute you.

  6.  @Amandadecadenet

Amanda de Cadenet, a British-born actress, photographer, author, and presenter, made waves in the '90s as a "wild child" and "it girl" in the British media. However, she eventually disappeared from the party scene and settled in America, where she raised her daughter and embarked on a mission to empower women. We stumbled upon her show "The Conversation," where she interviewed some of the world's most famous and influential women, tackling topics such as sexuality, body image, relationships, human rights, and politics. At the time, her show was groundbreaking, predating the rise of Instagram and the body positive movement. We have been following Amanda ever since. She is also the CEO of @girlgazeproject, an organization that supports women's creativity and works to close the gender gap. Amanda's transformation from wild child to inspiring advocate is nothing short of beautiful.

  7. @Mynameisjessamyn

Jessamyn Stanley, a yoga teacher, practitioner, and author of the book "Every Body Yoga," is known for debunking the notion that yoga is only for slim, petite individuals. Embracing the term "fat femme," Jessamyn has built an Instagram account that documents her journey as a yoga advocate. She firmly believes that yoga is for all people, regardless of their size, ethnicity, or background. Jessamyn emphasizes that she doesn't teach yoga exclusively to "fat people" but to everyone. It's worth noting that she effortlessly performs challenging poses like headstands, defying conventional expectations within the yoga community. Jessamyn is a true trailblazer, and we admire her for challenging norms and spreading her message of inclusivity.

  8. @Iskra

Iskra Lawrence, a British model and positive advocate, has faced body image battles throughout her modeling career. At the age of fifteen, she was dropped by her modeling agency because her hips were deemed "too big." She experienced firsthand how her body was altered and manipulated to fit the industry's standards. Iskra instinctively knew this was wrong and decided to share real and unretouched images of herself on social media. The response was overwhelming. Now, Iskra actively teaches women to unlearn negative thinking imposed upon them by peers and encourages them to love themselves as they are. Iskra has given TED Talks, manages her YouTube channel, and promotes body positivity, fashion, modeling, and activism through her social media platforms. With 3.8 million Instagram followers, she is making a significant impact in the modeling industry and beyond. We find her work as a body-positive advocate and motivational speaker, awesome and salute her for helping women feel great about themselves.

  9. @meganjaynecrabbe

Megan Crabbe, also known as @bodyposipanda, discovered at the age of five that her body was different from other girls. To conform, she began dieting at the age of ten, eventually leading to a diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa at fourteen. Megan has experienced hospitalization and stays in psychiatric units, and she firmly believes that without the body positive movement on social media, she would still be struggling. Megan stumbled upon the hashtag #DontHateTheShake, started by Melissa Gibson (@yourstruelymelly), and posted a video of herself dancing to Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" to show body shamers what she thought of their comments. Megan's version went viral and turned her into a role model for men and women within the body positive community. She has written a best-selling book called "Body Positive Power" and is a passionate advocate for women accepting themselves. Megan's mission is to prevent a five-year-old from feeling insecure, a ten-year-old from dieting, or a fifteen-year-old from being admitted to psychiatric units. Megan, we salute you for your inspiring work.
