How To Care For Your Silk Face Mask

Tips for Taking Care of Your Silk Face Mask.

As we emerge from lockdown, medical professionals and scientists have advised us to wear face masks when travelling outside, to reduce the risk of further contamination and infection from the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are several reasons why face masks are effective in reducing the spread of infection. First, they provide a physical barrier to droplets and particles that may contain the virus. Second, they help to reduce the exposure to respiratory secretions, which can contain the virus. Finally, they help to remind us to not touch our face, which can help to reduce the risk of infection.

While face masks are not a guarantee against infection, they are a simple and effective way to reduce the risk of spreading the virus, and are an accessory you cannot leave your home without.

Why We Made Our Face Masks

The face mask market is saturated with options made from synthetic fabrics that can be harsh on the skin. When we set out to create our face mask, we wanted to make something that was gentle and beneficial for the skin, not something that would exacerbate existing skin concerns.

Benefits of Silk and Cotton

We chose to use 100% silk and organic cotton for our face mask because these materials are gentle on the skin and allow for better breathing. Silk is a natural protein fiber that is strong, smooth, and hypoallergenic, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin. Organic cotton is a natural fiber that is also gentle on the skin and breathable, making it a good choice for those with oily or acne-prone skin.

Silk and cotton materials are also effective at protecting against droplets and upper respiratory infections. Additionally, few people have allergies to these fabrics. For more information, please see Dr. Liji Thomas' paper “Silk useful as face mask and PPE in COVID-19” in which she details this.

How To Wear Your Face Mask

Wearing a face mask is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself from the elements. But with so many types and styles of face masks available, it can be hard to know what to choose and how to wear your face mask properly.

With any silk face covering, your mask should sit comfortably against your face, covering your mouth, nose, and chin, but allowing for breathability. If your mask is too loose, it will not be as effective in protecting you from the elements. You can test the fit of your mask by holding it up to your face and taking a deep breath in. If the mask puffs out, then it is too loose, and you should try a different size or style.

How To Wash Your Face Mask

We advise that you handwash your silk mask using the steps below. Please note that we do not advise using fabric softeners, hot water, or placing your silk mask in a washing machine or in a dryer, as this will damage the fabric.

We cannot stress enough that silk face coverings are not machine washable, but, if for whatever reason you do not have time to handwash, use a silk setting or delicate cycle on your machine to clean. We would also advise that you care for your face mask as you would your lingerie.

Washing your silk face mask:

  1. Use a ph neutral gentle detergent or mild soap, please click on our article below for recommendations.

  2. Dampen the mask with cold water.

  3. Place a small amount of the silk detergent in the centre of the mask and gently wash with your hands for a few minutes.

  4. Rinse your mask under lukewarm water, the ideal water temperature, to wash away residual soap and next remove excess water.

  5. Gently pull your mask to its original shape, we recommended air drying silk fabric, so either hang your silk mask to dry or lay it flat on a towel to dry naturally.

How To Care Your Silk Face Mask

There are a few things to keep in mind when caring for a silk face mask. First, for hygiene reasons, it is important to wash the mask regularly, preferably after each use. Second, avoid harsh liquid detergents or cleaners that could damage the silk. For information on the best kind of detergent to use for your mask, check out our recommendations in our article Top 5 Lingerie Detergent recommendations. Third, silk face masks should be stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Finally, if the mask does become damaged, it is best to replace it immediately.
