Spring Clean Your Lingerie Drawer

lingerie organiser olyinkamag.jpg

Ladies, Spring is here and it's the perfect time to take a look in your underwear drawer and give it a refresh. Spring signifies change - the transition from Winter to Spring and it is a very significant time.

Spring represent rebirth, newness, and spring cleaning sets the platform on which you get rid of the old to let in the new - in this case new lingerie!

So here are some tips on how to spring clean you lingerie drawer:

  1. Remove all your lingerie, lay them out on your bed and have a good look at what you have. Any lingerie that looks unsightly, falling apart, misshapen - get rid of it. Girl you know you need to remove it unless there is a sentimental reason you need to keep it - then do so - if you must.

  2. Now, once you’ve decided what you want to keep, sort your lingerie into relevant piles - sets, briefs, slips corsets etc and leave them in their piles for now.

  3. Before your return your lingerie to your drawer - give your drawer a light clean with a gentle cleaning wipe - nothing too harsh and allow to dry

  4. Once your drawers are dry we suggest lining your drawers with scented liners, this will make your drawer and lingerie smell absolutely amazing.

  5. Alternatively, scented pouches are cool to keep in your drawer or even lightly spray with the perfume of your choice.

  6. Now your drawers are smelling absolutely fabulous darling and if you wish, you can insert drawer dividers to compartmentalise your already organised lingerie - check them out in Amazon

  7. Your lingerie is now ready to be placed back in your your drawers to organise how you wish.

Boobs Glorious Boobs

The Cut

The Cut

It is not a secret that we women have a love hate relationship with our bodies, whether it be our bum, legs, thighs, nose or breasts, there will always be something we're dissatisfied with, which is normal. You would have to be pretty superhuman and mentally elevated to look at yourself in the mirror and say “I am perfect” and walk away truly believing this. I personally have to say this mantra a couple of thousand times before my mind gets it, but hey - I’ll save that for another blog post perhaps…

For now, let’s talk about breasts and our relationship with them.

It is a topic that we at Olyinka, being a lingerie brand, talk about on a daily basis, and one of the most contentious issues around the subject of breasts, is shape. Are they perky enough, big enough, are they too small, too flat, too droopy? Do they feel ok? Are they too hairy, freckly, wrinkly, spotty and are you less than a woman because you don’t have breasts? All these issues and more are very real for women.

In one of our newsletters we discussed how we view our bodies and asked the question; If we saw our bodies beyond the aesthetic, would we treat it differently?

What if you viewed your body as a vessel whose purpose is to carry your spirit and help you to navigate your life on this earth?

We believe that if you viewed your body a something that needs to be aesthetically pleasing and perfect - you will be forever wanting to change it.

However, If you understood that your body is designed to carry your spirit, to nourish and care for you, in order for you to function effectively and operate at your highest level, then maybe you would view your body no matter the shape, size and imperfections,  as a thing of beauty.

So, breasts - what are their functions? Well, to nourish, to comfort, a symbol of seductive expression. They represent love, affection, emotion, compassion, so it is no coincidence that our breasts are connected to the heart.

The ancients viewed the breastplate as a symbol of power, so to all women who do not have breasts for whatever reason, your breastplate contains your power, you are still spiritually whole, you are still woman - remember this.

To encourage you, we found the following article in The Cut Magazine - New York Women who draw their boobs. The Cut polled 57 New York women, ages 17 to 72 (plus one 4-year-old who grabbed the marker from her mom) and asked them to draw their boobs and write one sentence explaining how they feel about them. In cafés and bars, on playground benches and on the way to work, women laughed when they heard the question, disparaged their drawing abilities, and gave it a shot.

Check out the article here and read what women really feel about their boobs, you may feel the same also. What is your relationship with your body, are you happy, dissatisfied?

Lets start the conversation below… we would love to know…

Iskra Lawrence on loving your body

Iskra (1).jpg

(This post was originally published on September 2nd 2017 and updated on September 2nd 2018)

Iskra lawrence a model and body positive advocate collaborated with High Quality Human Beings to film a video about body confidence and she did so by stripping down to her underwear in a New York City subway train. Oh yes she did! Some commentators have objected to this film by saying that Iskra was being provocative, but we believe in order to get people's attention about important issues such as body confidence, provocation is needed.  Women's bodies have been objectified and over-sexualised for too long. Women have hated their bodies because it did not conform to societal standards and as a result have unconsciously surrendered their bodies to these powers. Women are now waking up, taking back control by accepting their bodies and as a result society and industry leaders are now being forced to adjust to the pressure and the movement.  So whether you agree with Iskra's methods or not, this movement is here to stay and could not have been possible if it was not for her and countless other women speaking out against these issues. We wanted to bring to you awareness of the women we follow  and who are doing great things in this arena and compiled a list of body positive Instgrammers we recommend you follow. By giving more power to this movement, women are in control and to this we say, yes and amen! Enjoy x

The A to Z of lingerie shapes Part 2 - Bras

Continuing from our article on The A to Z of lingerie shapes Part 1 - Briefs we wanted to shine the spotlight on the various bra types that are currently available on the market. In our article How to measure your bra size, we provided you with simple tips on how to determine your breast size. We pointed out that once you have successfully identified your size, you can then go on to decide which lingerie brand produces the bras to suit your breast shape, because bras differ from brand to brand, and then you can finally experiment with styles.

So, to help you along, we have listed some bra styles below, but please note ladies, as we have pointed out in our previous articles, don't be disheartened by the process. Once you have worked out your size, your brand preference and your bra style, buying your bras moving forward will be more relaxed and a lot more enjoyable.

1. The non-wire soft bra is wire free and made to feel comfortable and lightweight. These bras can be worn at night or during the day when you need light support.

non wire soft bra.jpg

2. The balconette bra is a low cup bra designed to support and lift your breast fully. This bra gives the same support as a fully rounded bra but it’s a little sexier and is one of the most popular bras types on the market. Balconette bras works well with outfits with low or scooped necklines to show off your décolletage.

balconette bra.jpg

3 T-shirt bras are seamless, smooth cups designed to look invisible under clothing, there is a saying If you don’t notice a T-shirt bra, then you know it is doing its job. Designed to wear under clothes which are generally clingy to give you a seamless look.

t shirt bra.jpg

4. The push-up bra is designed to push your breasts up to create an enhanced cleavage, a fuller and uplifted shape which is stylish and comfortable. These bras are designed to wear with low cut tops and dresses

Push ip bra.jpg

5. The Minimizer bra isdesigned to reduce the appearance of your breasts by lifting and redistributing your breast tissue, making them flattering and not compromising the natural shape of your bust and body. This bra work well under both tight and loose clothing pieces and make your form look natural and shapely under tighter tops and dresses.

minimizer bra.jpg

6. Padded bras are designed to add fullness to the bust line and enhance the appearance of your bust. Women use padded bras to compensate for uneven or disproportional breasts, they come with removable inserts or are padded to give your breasts a more natural, rounded look.  These bras are designed to wear under tight, form-fitted clothing, t-shirts, when you want great cleavage under low-cut tops and when you want to prevent nipple show-through.

7. The Strapless bras tend to include a silicone or rubber lining to provide support and designed for garments with no shoulder straps. You can find different types such as in longline styles, plunge styles, push up styles, full figure styles, low cuts and bridal styles and best worn with off the shoulder tops and dresses

8. Maternity Bras. Expectant mothers will notice their breasts will become fuller, more tender and will start to change around 12 weeks into the pregnancy. It is within this period, it is advised to get fitted for a maternity bra. The average mum will go up two underbands and four cup sizes so its important that your bra is adjustable – with at least four hook positions so you can adjust your underband throughout the day. Maternity bras have a fuller cup shape, deeper center front, and wider straps and made from fabrics which are breathable such as cotton, which allows your skin to breathe easier. They also have brushed back elastics which feel soft against your skin.

And there are more...

7 Convertible bras are unique as they are designed to be several bras in one. Convertible bras come with detachable straps that can be arranged in multiple ways by hooking them onto different slots at the front or the back. Some convert to halter bras. Strapless... the list goes on and can be worn according to your dress style

Adhesive backless bras - this bra has no back and is held in place by adhesive cups ideal for backless dresses

Plunge bras - are designed with a cut low at the centre and work really well with clothes that have plunging and deep v necklines.

Mastectomy Bras are for women who have had a full, partial mastectomy or reconstructive surgery, or no surgery at all. Most mastectomy bras contain cup linings or pockets to contain a breast prosthesis and have been selected primarily for their excellent fit, comfort, and support. To make women who have been through surgery feel like themselves.

SSo, ladies, there are a lot of bras out there, We hope our articles help you find the best fitting bra and if there are any other questions you have that you would like us to write about please feel free to comment below. In the meantime happy bra shopping! xx

How To Care For Your Lingerie

(This post was originally published on Feb 20th 2016 and updated on July 5th 2018)

Have you ever wondered why lingerie from the 1900's to 1960's are collector's items today? The reason is underwear from that era was very well made, produced with the best quality fabrics and contained a "delicately wash" care label instruction, which all contributed to the longevity and quality of this lingerie to this day.

Olyinka adheres to these same quality standards because like the lingerie of old we want our underwear to last for years to come; therefore all our garments are constructed from rich, delicate fabrics - the most beautiful chiffon, silk, organic cotton, made to the highest quality and with attention to detail. Each garment is made to fit the feminine figure harmoniously.

To retain the structure of your lingerie, we also advise hand-washing your silk intimates to maintain its shape and quality. We have written an article on our Top 5 best lingerie detergents to use for this purpose. Click here for the article.

Want further advice on how to care for your intimates? We love the article by Harpers Bazaar who interviewed Claire Chambers, owner of the luxury lingerie boutique Journelle who shared her best tips on how to wash your lingerie. We at Olyinka HQ agree with the suggestions mentioned, so ladies, please click on the link for the article below and remember to take notes. :-) Click here for the article. x

The A to Z of lingerie shapes Part 1 - Briefs

(This post was originally published on April 20th 2015 and updated on July 3rd 2018)

When we asked a few close female friends the question how many styles of underwear did they think were on the market? The answers were a little surprising. The general response was two, three styles maximum. So we at Olyinka HQ decided to put together a guide of the various shapes of underwear available to women on the market and recommend the correct garments to wear with them. Some women prefer to wear the same shape underwear for comfort so may not have full knowledge of the various brief shapes on the market and importantly their function, so stick to what they know. Ladies, there are some great shapes out there and once you've tried them you'll be pleasantly surprised how well they compliment your body and your outfit, so here goes...

1. Classic briefs are the most popular traditional underwear. Comfortable and completely covers your bottom. Most are designed with a low-rise waistband which sits below the natural waistline and designed with lower cut legs, ideal to wear with fabrics such as denim or wool as it camouflages the visual panty line.

2. The high-cut brief is similar to the classic brief, however legs are cut high which gives a more flattering shape. It provides full coverage of the bottom and tummy and gives a more defined silhouette underneath clothes.

3. Control briefs are for women who desire a streamline silhouette and smooth curves without having to go to the gym. Contains stretch fabric or spandex and is ideal to wear under dresses and lighter fabrics, these briefs will hold you in all the right places.

4. Hipster briefs provides a more trendier shape for women, It sits below the hips with a low rise waistline, flattering under mid rise pants and provides full coverage of your front and back.

5.Bikini shape briefs offer full coverage front and back, sits below the natural waistline and is ideal for low-rise pants, jeans and shorts.

6. Boyshorts offer full coverage front and back, fits tight against your skin with low-rise waistline and low legs. Ideal to wear with dresses, skirts and trousers or even to bed with a camisole.

7. Tanga offers moderate to minimal coverage for your front and backside. More than a thong but narrower than a bikini, its reduces the visible panty line under tight-fitting garments.

8. Thongs offers minimal coverage front and back, These briefs consists of  a small cut of fabric at the back and a narrow pieces of fabric at the back. Designed to prevent visual panty lines therfore ideal to wear with figure hugging clothes .

9. G-string offers minimal coverage, consists of a triangle shape at the front and a very narrow string at the back. The string is designed to sit between the buttocks and reveals much of your bottom. Eliminates visible panty lines and ideal to wear under tight fitting clothes.
